Mitsui was introduced when he unmasked his 'mask' revealing his two missing front teeth. Another delinquent. At that time he was in a fight with Miyagi. He was mad/envious at Miyagi because Miyagi was the new star player in the basketball team. Then they got into a fight. Akagi hit him. Twice. That's when Kogure opened up the whole story.

Mitsui was a famous basketball player back in lower secondary school and won the MVP title. He turned down famous schools' application to enter Shohoku because Anzai Sensei is there. Mitsui and Akagi met. Both wanted to show off their skills. But Akagi was a very bad player at that time and Mitsui rules. But Mitsui had a knee injury and he was admitted to the hospital. Being stubborn as he is, (and his deep love for basketball), Mitsui always goes out to practice even though he was suppose to be resting. He wanted to make Anzai Sensei proud of him. Then one day, he miraculously healed. He went to Shohoku basketball court and challenged Akagi to play. As they played, Mitsui collapsed and clutched his knee. His knee wasn't properly healed. The last time Kogure saw him in the court was when Mitsui hopped in with his crutches and out of the court never to return. After the whole story, Anzai Sensei walked towards them, Mitsui broke down to the floor, crying, saying that he wanted to play again.

Mitsui cuts his hair in a crew cut and joined the team. He's known for his 3 pointers. He was the star of Shohoku during the match against Shoyo. He was guarded by Hasegawa who still sees him as an opponent since middle school. Mitsui scored 20 points for Shohoku. He didn't shine much during the match with Kainan and Ryonan. But Mitsui collapsed during the second half of the match against Ryonan, which brings much joy to Coach Taoka. Over the 2 years, Mitsui didn't practiced, so he's lack of stamina and he tires fast. And he goes to the toilet before a match. To ease up the tension, I guess (just a note).

Mitsui didn't quit the team to study for University like Akagi and Kogure. He stayed with the Shohoku team.
